NGEYWO BUTAKI FOUNDATION:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  Ngeywo Butaki Foundation is established in honor of Samson Ngeywo Arap Butaki who was born at Masindet (Kamusinde) in 1911 and died at Kaptama in 2002. His father was Butaki Arap Psiya of Kapsewuy clan and his mother was Chepkutwo of Kabai clan. Ngeywo Butaki’s mother was the first to die in 1925 when he was 14 years old while his father died in 1929 when he was eighteen years old.                                                                                                                      Ngeywo Butaki had an extra ordinary determination to survive all odds after all his fourteen siblings had died before age five and both his parents died when he was only eighteen being the last and only surviving son. Mzee Ngeywo lived with his uncle Pyebei upon the death of his parents. Strangely, he managed to go to school at Kima Mission in Bunyore where he attained grade 6 education before proceeding to Bukura Agricultural Institute in 1936. He graduated in 1939 with a certificate in Agriculture. He was among the first African professionals in Agriculture in the colonial era. Because of the war (1939-1945), he could not be employed until 1946 when he joined the Ministry of Agriculture where he worked and retired in 1963.
Ngeywo Arap Butaki married three wives namely Maiba, Daughter of Arap Mayiek (Kamaan Clan) in 1934, Maua, Daughter of Kapchanga (Kamingeny Clan) in 1947 and Grace, Daughter of Cherongis (Kaprangach Clan) in 1955. He had fourteen sons and nine daughters. He brought up his children in a strict disciplinary fashion. He educated all his children and guided them both according to the Koony Culture and modern enlightenment ways acquired during his education. Several of his children are among the first University Graduates in Mt. Elgon District. Several have held responsible positions in the public and private sector in this country.
In order to capture his legacy in a sustainable way, the family decided to establish the Ngeywo Butaki Foundation. This foundation was established with emphasis on education (Library), Culture (Museum) and the Mausoleum to preserve a man who attained extra ordinary achievements in spite of great adversity. In the future, it is hoped that this foundation will attract partners in the private and public sectors, individuals and institutions to promote education, science, culture, ecotourism and other human development activities.

The Mausoleum
The Mausoleum preserves the remains of Mzee Ngeiywo Butaki and has several personal effects that he used during his life i.e. walking stuff and pictures taken during different occasions.

The Museum
The museum houses the cultural artifacts used by the Koony people in the primal age.
The artifacts include ceremonial dresses used during events, a shield, bows and arrows, spear, traditional grinding stones, “Bukandiit”, head gear worn during ceremonies, necklaces etc.

The library
Currently, the library is equipped with over 5000 copies of books that include; references, Bibles, Christian books, economic books, science books and school text books that are of value to the community

The Cultural Centre
The work on the Ngeywo Butaki cultural centre was started in 2011 being cognizant of the fact that the western Kenya tourist circuit does not have any established cultural Museums and libraries of any substance; the Ngeywo Butaki foundation has embarked on creating a centre in the heart of Mt. Elgon that will among other activities have a Museum, Library and a Mausoleum that will bring tourists, students and enthusiasts of history to learn the cultural aspects of the Koony people while promoting ecotourism and providing a platform for educational exchanges with others in the western region and beyond.
